SCULPTURES BY ROD BRADFIELD
I grew up in northern and southern Illinois. As an elementary student I was fortunate enough to take weekend classes at and wander the Art Institute of Chicago, a definite influence on later work.
Undergraduate and graduate work were completed at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana. An undergraduate degree in Fine Arts was earned in 1972, with Painting and Printmaking area majors. I was co-owner and operator of `The Workbench' leather shop in Terre Haute for several years shortly thereafter while also returning to Indiana State University to work on teaching certification. Graduate studies were in Art Education. I taught Visual Arts at the secondary level at various locations for 34 years, retiring in 2011 after teaching at Terre Haute South High School for 25 years.
Consistently producing and exhibiting artwork while and since earning my undergraduate degree, I have exhibited and been represented in galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe. Examples have been published in exhibit catalogs and magazines and included in public and private collections throughout the U.S.
I maintain a studio at my wife Jacquie's and my rural lakefront home south of Terre Haute. We have 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren.
Many of the works on display at 12 Points Market are from a Tetrahedron Series, originally created for an exhibit at the former Halcyon Gallery in Terre Haute. The series consists of sculpted geometric and organic variations on the triangular pyramid form which then provides a 3 dimensional `canvas' for exploring different color themes. Some take on a definite lifelike feel, while others remain more geometric.
The `Untitled Moonhead Figure', `Moon', `Buffalo Man with New Neck Tie' and possibly `3 Men' (which is one of only a few sculptures I've created without color) stem from numerous trips to the South West and the influence of prehistoric rock art. Large coil formed bowls were created as another type of 3 dimensional `canvas' for color exploration. The `Buzzard' and `Crow' sculptures (and other non-hanging birds that aren't included in this exhibit) honor birds I find particularly interesting.
Exhibit and gallery representation list available upon request.
